Meeting, October 21, 2014

Today we met and briefly talked about Andrew Clements. He writes very funny and silly books. I highly recommend him.
The next book we will read is Al Capone Does My Shirts. It should be available by Friday, October 24. If you want to read it, just go up to the library desk and let them know you are in book club. The book is about a family who moves to San Francisco so his dad can work at Alcatraz. It is considered historical fiction and is a Lone Star Book, so either of those spots on the 40 Book Challenge can be used for this book.
See you guys November 18!

November Meeting

We had 7 students at our November meeting to discuss Roald Dahl and his books. The books that we read were Matilda, The BFG, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. We discussed how Mr. Dahl's inspiration for the teacher from Matilda came from one of his daughter's real teachers. We also talked about how Mr. Dahl theme seems to center around kindness vs. meanness (instead of good vs. evil). It was noted that Mr. Dahl got his stories from his nightly storytime with his children.
December's book is called When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr. It is the story of a family who had to leave Germany shortly after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. Our next meeting date is December 17.

September 24th Meeting

6th & 7th Grade Book Club met this morning to discuss the book Schooled by Gordon Korman. Schooled is about a boy named Cap Anderson who has never been to public school but is forced into it unexpectadly.
Everyone in the group really liked it. They liked the way Cap responded when he was being bullied. Some favorite parts were when Cap was being a witness to his first school fight, when he did tai chi, when he made tie dye shirts, and when he attended his own memorial service.
Our next book will be Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. It is about a boy named Ender who is being trained to help defeat the invading alien bug army. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, October 29 at 7:50 in room 301. Hope to see you there!
